Ardrossan
February 2002

Presbytery Prattle - Feb. 2002 - Ardrossan

Yellowhead Presbytery met at Ardrossan, Feb. 20 and 21, 2002. Greeted by Shirley Richards, Chair of the Board, and treated very well by everyone from the pastoral charge thereafter!

During reporting time, each speaker read a 'child's prayer' before reporting.

Dear God; Is it true my father won't get into heaven if he uses his bowling words in the house? Anita

Opening Worship- Warm and inspiring from Kathy Suteau and Modise Molefe, with communion. "We are a new creation in Christ" was the message.

Dear God; Maybe Cain and Abel would not kill each other so much if they had their own rooms. It works with my brother. Larry

Shared Ministry - Ann McMeekin spoke about celebrating 25 years of Shared Ministry (Lutherans, Anglicans and United) at Slave Lake. Note: National Ecumenical Shared Ministry Conference April 18-21 2002 at Grey Nuns Retreat Centre - Theme "Sharing Ministry, Sharing Mission." To register contact Pastor Phil Hink (phink at elcis.ca) or phone 780-439-2636

Revelation Book and Gift Co-operative - This may be the new name that will carry on the work of The Book Room in Edmonton. Co-operative style with hope other denominations may support it. Need capital to begin. Shares are $ 50.00 each but you get back $ 40.00 worth of books. See Tom Sawyer for details.

Dear God; I didn't think orange went with purple until I saw the sunset you made on Tuesday. That was cool.- Ken (not Flanagan!)

Remits: Information was handed out about further remits that must be studied and voted on. Note: All pastoral charges will be receiving remit regarding potentially changing our form of government from a four court structure to a three court structure. Official Boards will need to have input for the General Council Meeting of 2003.

God Spots: Throughout the meeting, several "God spots" from the inspirational George Pell of Slave Lake Pastoral Charge. God was with us at every moment.

Dear God; Thank you for the baby brother, but what I prayed for was a puppy. - Joyce

From Christian Development: Natalka Dreichel reported VBS will continue again this year. If you haven't asked for VBS to come to you, it might even be too late, but contact her anyway. UCW are meeting at the Providence Centre on March 2,3, 2002. Bring a bible, a Voices United and a symbol of your spirituality. Camps- Information was made available. Also Communications will make available camp info on the presbytery website. Life Long Learning has a budget of $ 1,500 so Al McNeil says "use if or lose it" by applying before the event. $150 limit per person per year. Interfaith -Ursula Martin is promoting "World Peace?" A search for understanding in Tumultuous Times. Edson FCSS Family Centre March 9, 2002; cost $ 10.00 per person or $ 25 per family. Pre-register at Edson Community Learning (723-6247) or contact Ursula at 723-2497 (That is the Ursula who will be celebrating 50 years of marriage on March 8th!!) Also keep March 15/16 2002 in mind for the "Spring into the Spirit" event at Hinton Alberta. Features Noelle Bowles and Glenn Smith as presenters. This is a call to all leaders and 'would-be' leaders who are interested in the future of our church. Register with Martha Dawson at pinelane at telusplanet.net and send $ 40.00 for registration.

Dear God; We read Thomas Edison made light. But in Sunday School they said you did it. I bet he stole your idea. Donna

Conference Guests: The President of Alberta & Northwest Conference, Austin Fennell and our soon-to-be-retired executive George Rodgers joined us. Austin gave an excellent speech about being the church today and George spoke to the remits we will be looking at and how to proceed. (Some folks thought the 'retirement' cake for George was the real highlight of the meeting!)

Dear God; I want to be just like my Daddy when I get big, but not with so much hair all over. Tom

Stewardship Report: Georgina Bruleigh emphasized the importance of getting back the signed copies of the Mission and Service Covenant forms. Why not have as many people as possible sign them - not just the stewardship committee.

Dear God; who draws the lines around the countries? Jan

Presbytery Mission Development (formerly known as PMS) will now have a representative on the executive. Presently that person is Tom Sawyer who presented several possibilities of providing ministry in hard-to-fill places. A full report will be in the minutes.

Dear God; I bet it is very hard for you to love all of everybody in the whole world. There are only four people in our family and I can never do it. Nan

Chair's Report: Kathy Suteau reminded everyone about the covenanting service at Lamont Pastoral Charge on Sunday evening, February 24the at 7:00 pm. It is always good when we can support one another. Ian Otterbein (a theology student from Yellowhead) was present for some of the meeting and gave out information about St. Andrew's College, for pastoral charges and individuals. (It was at this point the Chair rambled on about some sort of Dr. Seuss missing report and I firmly believe she is ready to get out of the chair position as soon as possible! But that is only my opinion.)

Dear God; I went to this wedding and they kissed right in church. Is this ok? Neil

Communications: Next meeting we definitely will ask for minute books for auditing purposes. Vests: If you would like one contact Judy Stretch at Spruce Grove as she would like to get some orders so that we can maintain the best price. Web Site: Peter Chynoweth (a.k.a The Sorcerer) has been really busy giving us one of the best presbytery websites we could wish for. He has continually been adding new links and now he will attempt to put back issues of minutes on the site thanks to a new Adobe Writer program approved for purchase by the executive. More good things to come just as soon as we hook up with a new server! At the October meeting the division will have a hands-on presentation of how to use computers to research an item. May be old news for some but a good way to learn to get the best out of the computer (mine gets the worst out of me!) Telling our Story: Working on a plan to have pastoral charges include their story when they bring minutes for audit. More information to follow. A Cycle of Prayer will be organized and out to all pastoral charges shortly. We can pray for different parts of "the Body" each Sunday.

Dear God; My brother is a rat! You should give him a tail! Ha Ha. Amy

CIS/World Outreach/Heritage: Now this division, which used to be two have married each other and will live happily every after. Neither partner was willing to take the name of the other so the division will now be The Church in the World. And that pretty much says it all! SKRIM was presented by Modise. If you don't know about this, please contact Bert Giffin at Stony Plain or Modise Molefe at Lamont and bring this on board in your pastoral charge. Letters will be sent to support peace in the world including one to our Prime Minister thanking him for the stand on "independent" thinking regarding further war measures.

Dear God; Instead of letting people die and having to make new ones, why don't you just keep the ones you have? Amy

Thursday Morning Worship - with Ardrossan Pastoral Charge. Mervin Gallant gave a good example of 'temptations' from the Lenten reading last week. He incorporated some of the ideas of Rev. Janet Wolfe who was the theme presenter at the Winter Refresher at Saskatoon this month. Several folks from Yellowhead were there.

Annual Meeting at Vermilion: If you plan to attend the annual meeting and if you are clergy or lay or otherwise required to attend, you need an application from the Secretary. Please contact me, Ken Flanagan at wuc_alta at teluplanet.net or phone 780-778-2578.

Dear God; If you give me a genie like Aladdin, I will give you anything you want; except my money or my chess set. Raphael.

Finance/Property/Treasurer: Most pastoral charges have paid their assessments so we have some money again! Leslie Penny gave information on the criteria for Mission Support grants. Full minutes will have it but if you are seeking any information regarding grants, please contact Leslie at Barrhead.

Dear God; I read the Bible. What does "begat" mean. No one will tell me. Allison

M P & E: All three sub-committees are busy with the work of the church. Congregational stories were heard throughout the meeting, from Rainbow and Woodland and in time we will hear one another's stories.

Future Meetings: In April we meet at Rainbow Pastoral Charge, a three point charge which will take us to Pickardville, Clyde and Jarvie. Annual Meeting of Alberta & Northwest Conference is at Vermilion; May 23 to 26th.

Nominations: Phyllis Greenslade and Mervin Gallant, the Nominations Committee were busy behind the scenes trying to find people to keep us up an running for another year. In case they don't know you have a burning passion to work in the presbytery give them a call. They would love to hear from you. As Pogo once said (almost) "I have looked at presbytery. And it is us!

Ken Flanagan - your undying but almost dead secretary!

Dear God; I do not think anybody could be a better God. Well, I just want you to know that I am not just saying that because you are God already! Charles
