Hello Everyone!

Just a few updates from the Surprise Lake Camping world! Please share this with your network.

Upcoming Events:
May 15: Board meeting at camp (time 11am), open to public - only directors may vote or make motions.
May 15-16: official work weekend - bring your tools, sleeping bag and don't forget your friends!
May 21-24 (long weekend): work/camp weekend part 2. For those unable to attend the previous weekend we are allowing friends of SLC to come and spend their long weekend at camp picking up the work that is not finished the weekend prior.

June 12/13: Volunteer Training weekend. 10am Saturday to 8pm Sunday. Attendance is highly recommended for those parents, alumni and former CIT/staff wishing to volunteer at any point during the 2010 summer season. In order to volunteer at camp, a police record check is required as well as a 2 day training opportunity according to both Alberta Camping Association and United Church of Canada standards and practices. We will be providing food for Sunday's meals, but please bring a packed lunch and potluck dinner item for Saturday. Questions and Inquiries can be directed to April Keighan 780-695-6854.

June 13: Camp Open house 1-6pm. This is the perfect opportunity to check out Surprise Lake Camp and see how we're doing. There will be activities run by our newly trained volunteers and Managers available to address concerns of parents. Join us for an afternoon or excitement and stay for an evening dinner by the fire. (Donations will be accepted).

Summer Staff:
...
Have mostly** been hired. April Keighan is taking charge this summer as Camp Manager 2010 - CONGRATULATIONS. I (Megan Graham) will be reprising my role as Program Manager and Christian Development. Will Rutherford has returned from a few years sabbatical taking on our Outdoor Education Leader. We'd also like to welcome Stephanie Pitre and Jamie Eisenkrein as Senior Counselors for the summer. Our cooking team is in the works. Thanks to Donna Szalacsi who took on the Personnel Directorship this year!

**We are still looking to fill 1 more senior counselor role and our waterfront leader; preferably male. Our Hiring Committee is taking resumes and applications for both until the positions are filled. Contact Donna for information at 780-967-2810.

Summer Program:
Our theme for the summer is "The Nature of Things with SLC". This will find our campers exploring what makes up the world around them and each other.

Featured this year are two "new and improved" camps: SURVIVAL CAMP - for those campers interested in learning to camp respectfully in the forests of Alberta (ages 11-15); and FAMILY CAMP - for all generations wishing to experience the joys of camping together.
As tradition, we are running regular camps for children ages 5-17; these are age specific and co-ed, all of which are listed on our website. Our Early Bird deadline has passed already, but there may still be space, so get your registrations in fast to reserve a spot! For information on registrations contact Betty Bowman at 780-712-4091.

60th Anniversary:
...
Is just around the corner! 1951-2011. Clear your calendar for next summer. Be prepared for lots of exciting activities and events.
The first to gear you up - is our logo contest. Design what you think our next logo should look like and your creation may be the winner and appear on all official 60th anniversary promotional material (not to mention awesome prizes). Detailed rules and forms are on the website.
June 3-5, 2011 will be a joined event with Edson's Centennial Celebration. Complete with costumes and memorabilia, we'll take you back to the good ol' days with a talent show, silent auction and dinner, plus camp out for the weekend and participate in time-honored traditions of SLC!

If you have any pictures, stories or other memories to share, please get in contact with us and hopefully we can compile a detailed history and presentation for future generations.

Donations:
A Special Thank you to those groups and individuals who have supported the camp just recently and through the past couple years. Just this past summer, we were forced to deal with aging equipment as both our walk-in cooler and commercial stove quit working. We are still in great need of funds and volunteer labour to complete the work of replacing this crucial equipment. Every dollar counts!
I'd also like to send an encouraging word to all our congregations checking off donations from their lists as well as those friends of SLC committed to the fund raising projects started in their community. Keep it up, and pass on the word to others!!

If you would like to be removed from our email list, or need clarification on any subject feel free to reply directly to this email.

Thank you so much for your interest and attention. We hope to see you down the road!
